Weekend away at Slimbridge

06 March 2017

Region: South West

We had 17 members and partners arrive on what was a fairly showery day. Some had managed a walk along the Berkley Canal before darkness fell, a slightly muddy walk but good to stretch your legs after the journey. The Tudor Arms looked after us admirably, setting up a long table for us in their conservatory which we had sole use of for the weekend. Dinner was taken, after which we looked at some prints which attendees had bought to share. Saturday morning was much better weather wise than had been forecast, and we got through the day with just a couple of very short showers, John Page had arranged a trip to the observatory tower for the group prior to all setting off on our way around Slimbridge to photograph the vast array of birds and wildfowl in residence. Some more infrequent visitors were seen by those that know these things, the rest of us taking whatever took our fancy. After a long day we once more adjourned to the conservatory for pre dinner drinks and then a very amicable evening meal followed by viewing some more images which people had bought along.

Sunday morning dawned very wet and pouring with rain, but this had more or less stopped by the time we set off, with most of the group going to Purton Hulks, some by a very circuitous route. but we got there in the end. Again the showers started, some quite heavy at times, which required taking shelter before attacking the mud underfoot where the barges are beached. The rain actually helped bring out the textures at the times that the sun shone.

Following this, most made their way homeward and some of the images from the weekend will show as part of this blog.

On behalf of the Region, I would like to thank all those that attended and made it such an enjoyable weekend.

Please do have a look at the images and leave a comment on the set or on specific images

Very pleased to be at Slimbridge, even enjoying the mud and rain of the beached boats area! Lovely images to bring the w/e to life again. Very sad though to find out the old tower hide (I am assuming that is what it was) is being demolished. Luckily, we do have the photographs of it to look back on.
